Welp, I'm Blogging Now

· Kelvin FSJ

So here I am, finally typing out my first blog after years of procrastination. I actually got inspired enough to start, thanks to Network Chuck’s YouTube video.

Yeah, starting a blog in the Age of AI probably meaningless, because everything can be generated! I mean, why not just let ChatGPT write it for me? But honestly, I’m a bit suspicious myself. How can you be sure this isn’t just another AI-generated article? đź‘€ (It’s not… probably.)

Building a Local CMS

Before diving into blogging, my inner script-kiddie aka. product-manager brain thought, “Why not build a local CMS from the ground up?” But reality hit, after I tried lol. It’s way too much work. Also, I i feels like I’m just reinventing the wheel.

Image Description My search started with Simply Static, a WordPress plugin for static HTML generation. It’s Perfect, until I saw the $99-a-year price tag. My inner cheapskate wasn’t having it, especially since roughly a million other free tools exist.

I stumbled across Publii, a tool that manages your blog locally and deploys it for free. almost perfect. There were other tools too, but, I’ve forgotten their names because my memory is shorter than a TikTok video.

Hugo Saves the Day

Eventually, I landed back on Hugo, the static site generator loved by nerds everywhere. Initially, I got attracted by the flashy Dream theme, complete with cool animations and a zen mode. After messing around a bit, though, the fancy stuff felt unnecessary.

Instead, I settled on the simpler Paper theme. Clean, straightforward, and easy for both humans and web crawlers. If AI wants to index my thoughts, who am I to stop it?

Why kelvinfsj.com?

About the domain: I originally considered using produckey.com. But mixing my company name with my random personal thoughts seemed awkward at best. Instead, I grabbed kelvinfsj.com, which, to my surprise, was still available, unlike [email protected], which someone mysteriously stole years ago. I’ve been using this handle since the Farmville era on Facebook, and it’s stuck ever since.

So, here we are. Domain secured, blog created, and procrastination finally pushed aside (for now). Let’s see how long this lasts before I inevitably procrastinate again.

Anyway, let’s see how this blogging journey unfolds.
